The first of many symptoms of faulty gas caps is going to be a gas cap that will not tighten completely or a loose gas cap. This may not seem significant right away, but without an air-tight seal, the entire fuel system can be contaminated with grime and dirt. If your gas cap is not closing properly, try checking the rubber gasket to make sure it’s not missing or brittle. If you have an old car or truck, be sure the metal gas cap is not bent or damaged. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can contribute to the gas cap issues and might even require buying a replacement from the original manufacturer.
What concerns can a non-secure gas cap cause? How about a check engine light? A non-secure gas cap will not only let in dirt and grime, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape the fuel tank. These vapors may produce an error in the emissions system, which would light up the check engine light. Dirt and Grime that gets into the fuel tank can also damage injectors over time. Perhaps the most common sign of a bad gas cap is the smell of gasoline in your car.
These days you could possibly see no gas cap on new cars, but if your vehicle wasn’t constructed with a capless gas tank, it’s not recommended that you drive without a gas cap. If your car is older, there’s a possibility that gas could leak out from the tank during aggressive corners or other enthusiastic driving. Driving your vehicle without a gas cap can lead to diminished fuel efficiency because the gas may evaporate without a fully-sealed tank. The smell is the gasoline evaporating from the gas tank, causing poor fuel economy.
